Growth of Melissa

The rich soil of the Blackland Prairie and the waters of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River were what first attracted settlers to make their homes in the area. This was around the 1840s when people started living around the Highland community and what would be Melissa, TX. In 1872 the Houston and Texas Central Railroad made its way through the community and the town of Melissa came to be. Those who were living in Highland and were not located around the railroad decided to move their homes so they were located more centrally to the railroad.

By 1886, Melissa had a flour mill, two cotton gins that shipped 3,000 bales of cotton annually, and several business houses. It became a stop on The Texas Electric Railway that linked Dallas and Denison in 1908. This vital transportation network made Melissa a commercial and community center for farmers within the area.

Melissa, Texas was different than many of the rural communities in Texas They had amenities that most places did not. They had electric lights, paved roads, and a telephone exchange all before 1920. This was highly unusual and great for the town. Not to mention that the town was full of businesses, five churches, a large school, a bank, and a population of 400.

Tragedy and Decline in Melissa, TX

In the 1920s the town was hit with a series of tragedies. On April 13th, 1921, a tornado struck the town. The natural disaster ended up killing thirteen people, injuring fifty-four, and destroyed many of the homes and businesses within the town of Melissa. Then, on August 8, 1929, a fire made its way through the town and destroyed many of the buildings that the town had worked so hard to rebuild after the tornado.

The Great Depression, the mechanization of farming, and job opportunities in the Dallas metropolitan area after World War II further slowed community growth like it did in many of the smaller towns around Dallas. By the 1950s the population of Melissa had declined to around 285.

The population has gone up in the town since, however. In 1966 it was 375. The incorporation of Melissa in the early 1970s helped the population growth as well. In 1980 the population had grown to approximately 600. However, by 2000 the population more than doubled and reached 1,350!
