Say Goodbye to Summer and Start Preparing Your Home for Cooler Weather

The time you spend preparing your home for cooler weather is well spent and translates to lower energy bills this winter. Tending to your home’s comfort systems assures you that they’ll run dependably and safely when you most need them.

Check the Air Filter

Running the HVAC system with a dirty air filter will increase energy bills and hasten breakdowns. Changing it regularly — check it monthly to be on the safe side — will improve its performance and also keep the quality of indoor air higher. A clean filter traps more dust, pet dander and pollen, all common respiratory irritants.

Clean the Outdoor Condenser

Both central air conditioners and heat pumps use an outdoor condenser that needs periodic cleaning. Many of the homes in this area use heat pumps year-round for heating and cooling. Preparing your home for cooler weather by cleaning the condenser will improve its heating efficiency.

Remove any dead vegetation or blockages around the condenser and inspect the condition of the condensing coil. If it’s dirty, gently hose it off. Use a soft brush to loosen any grass clippings and dust.

Examine Ceiling Fans

Besides cleaning the blades on ceiling fans, check to see if they have a reversing switch. A ceiling fan that can change direction provides year-round energy savings. In the winter, the fan will bring down warmer air that collects near the ceiling. warm you at the mid to lower levels in your rooms.

Tune Up the HVAC System

Having an HVAC technician tune up your home’s heating and cooling system in the fall will save energy dollars and prolong the life of the system. The professional will clean and adjust all the parts and verify that the system operates efficiently and safely, particularly if you use a gas furnace. Ask them to check the airflow throughout your home if you suspect you have leaking ductwork or rooms that aren’t as comfortable.
