Your New Air-Conditioning System: Why the Right Match Is Key

Should you upgrade to a new air conditioning system, or simply replace the ailing component? For owners of split A/C ore heat pump systems, this can be a challenging decision. Fortunately, when you take the time to learn why your entire system must be properly matched, you’ll be equipped to make the best choice with confidence and ease.

Split system components must be a perfect match

In split system air-conditioners and heat pumps, the indoor and outdoor components are designed to work together as a team for maximum comfort and efficiency. If one of the two elements starts to fail before the other, it can be tempting to cut corners and only replace the ailing unit, but this is not a wise move. Without upgrading both the indoor and outdoor components, you’ll end up with an inefficient air-conditioning system that is not compliant with SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating) standards. It will be likely to fail prematurely.

Three things to consider when choosing a new air-conditioning system

In order to get the perfect match for your split system, consider the following:

  • 1. SEER – As of 2006, all air conditioning systems in the U.S. are required to meet a minimum standard of SEER 13. If your current system was installed before that date, it very likely carries a lower SEER. Replacing only one component of your system with a high SEER will reduce efficiency below the rated standard. Therefore, the replacement of both the indoor and outdoor unit is required.
  • 2. Refrigerant – Per federal mandate, new air conditioners are manufactured to utilize non-ozone depleting refrigerants such as R-410A. If your current air conditioner is utilizing the old R-22 refrigerant, you’ll end up with a mismatched system unless you replace all components. This will put excess strain on your system, and lead to early failure.
  • 3. Efficiency – Regardless of the efficiency ratings of each component, you will not receive the maximum benefit unless the components are properly matched with each other.
