What Is Involved With Upgrading a Thermostat

Cutting the energy consumption of your existing HVAC system might be as simple as upgrading a thermostat. Old thermostats are often inaccurate and that translates to a home that’s under- or over-conditioned at any given time. And if you’re gone routinely, choosing a programmable model will save you even more money, since you won’t need to keep your home as comfortable when you’re away.

Upgrading to a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat offers greater convenience because you don’t have to remember to change the settings throughout the day or night, even if you’re home 24/7, especially if you change the temperature based on time of day electric rates or personal comfort preferences.

While some programmable models simply remember to change the temperature, if you use a smart phone or have internet access away from home, you might benefit from a smart thermostat. These units offer a variety of convenient features that might include:

  • Checking your daily energy consumption.
  • Monitoring temperatures indoors remotely.
  • Receiving alerts about the status of your system, like when to call for service or to change the air filter.

Regardless of the degree of technology embedded in the device you choose, your other choices include:

  • 5-2 day models. Upgrading a thermostat to this type stores your work week schedule and a separate weekend schedule.
  • 5-1-1 day models. When you have a routine weekday schedule, but each day of your weekend has different home occupancy patterns, this type will give you the flexibility you need.
  • 7 day models. If each day is different or each is the same, you can program this one to meet each day’s schedule.

You must also choose a thermostat that’s compatible with your system. It’s helpful to bring the make and model of your HVAC system with you to verify it will work with your equipment. Two-stage heating systems or HVAC systems with zoning controls may require a specialized thermostat.
