When you’re planning an A/C installation, the most important first step is sizing the system for your home. HVAC contractors use software applications called Manuals J and D to accurately size the equipment and the ductwork. The size of your system affects your energy bills, comfort and your A/C’s durability for years to come.
Many think that bigger is better when it comes to cooling equipment, but that’s not the case. Systems that are too large leave humidity behind, trap fewer airborne particulates with the air filter and drive up energy bills. An air conditioner that’s too small won’t be able to adequately cool your home during weather extremes.
HVAC contractors find the best size by taking into account the energy efficiency of your home and other factors that impact the indoor cooling load. Manual J takes into account these considerations:
- Size of your home
- Insulation values in walls and attic
- Windows, their orientation to the sun and energy efficiency
- Air infiltration rates
- Layout of home
- Number of occupants and their ages
- Preferred indoor temperatures
- Appliances that create heat
- Landscaping factors
A significant benefit of going through this process is knowing where you can improve your home’s energy efficiency to lighten the cooling load, saving you money.
The second step in planning an A/C installation is the ductwork assessment, which is just as important as selecting the cooling appliance. Using Manual D, the contractor will assess the ductwork configuration the system needs to perform best. A thorough ductwork inspection will show any leaks. If your ducts run through uninsulated spaces like the attic, the contractor will recommend insulating them as well to reduce thermal losses.
Between the calculations that Manuals J and D provide, you’ll know that your new system will deliver the most energy efficiency and comfort for our long cooling season.
