How to Prep Your Home for McKinney's Fall and Winter

With cooler temperatures around the corner, it’s time for McKinney homeowners to prepare their homes’ for fall and winter weather. Here are some ways to help make sure your house is up for the challenge.

Perform Annual Boiler Maintenance

Fall is a great time to perform annual boiler maintenance. Prepare for cooler weather by draining your boiler and clearing out any debris in the tank. Regular maintenance helps ensure you will have hot water every time you turn on the faucet for the entire life of your boiler.

Improve Air Quality and Safety

An improperly maintained gas heater can discharge poisons and toxins into the air, which makes regular maintenance especially important for those units. Clean the air filters in your HVAC system to lower the chances of system failure, and remember that dirty air ducts could jeopardize your air quality. Also, make sure there are working batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to provide an alarm in the case of an emergency.

Schedule a Heating System Inspection

Heating systems will generally have fewer problems and run more efficiently with proper upkeep and preventive care, so it’s a good idea to have your heating system serviced by a licensed professional once a year. A good time to schedule heating services is in the early fall, before the heating season starts.

Check Your Insulation

Fall is also a good time to focus on insulation. Before winter comes, store garden hoses inside and shut off outdoor water valves. Be sure to drain all hoses and insulate outside faucets and pipes. Inside your house, make sure there is an even level of insulation covering your attic floor.

Winters in Texas aren’t as cold as northern states, but it still gets cold and we can have freezing temperatures. If you own a home in Collin County or the surrounding areas, call Bill Joplin’s Air Conditioning and Heating at (888) 414-4655 to speak with a professional and ensure you’re prepared for anything winter might bring.
