Air Cleaner Shopping? 3 Things to Consider Before You Buy

Maintaining clean, healthy indoor air is essential to ensuring your family’s health. Particles such as mold, allergens and dust occur naturally, but they can cause serious health problems if allowed to build up over time. Consider purchasing an air cleaner to remove the particles that can make your family sick. There are three important terms you should familiarize yourself before you begin shopping for an air cleaner:

Clean Air Delivery Rate

The clean air delivery rate, or CADR, reflects how quickly a unit can clean the air in your home and if the unit is the right size for the room you need it for. CADR numbers are provided for three types of pollutants: tobacco smoke, pollen and dust. Ratings are given in cubic feet per minute. For example, a rating of 100 for pollen means that the unit will remove the pollen from 100 cubic feet of air in one minute.

Asthma and Allergy Friendly

This is a rating that you may not see much of just yet, as it’s a relatively new standard. An air purifier earns this rating by significantly reducing the number of allergens in the air. If you suffer from indoors allergies, it might be worth your time to seek out a unit with this rating.

HEPA Filtration

High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are among the most advanced type of air filtration on the market. HEPA filters utilize a filter medium with a randomized fiber pattern to catch many different particles, including ones that traditional filters might miss. If you’re serious about your home’s air quality, be sure to get an air cleaner with a HEPA filter. Be wary of “HEPA-like” imitators which may be cheaper but not nearly as effective.
