4 DIY HVAC Maintenance Tasks You Should Perform Before Winter

Pre-winter home maintenance is essential to ensuring your family says comfortable all winter long. Luckily, there are several do-it-yourself HVAC maintenance tasks you can perform so that your system is ready to face the chilly temperatures ahead.

Change HVAC Air Filters

Changing your air filters at least once every three months is a good habit to get into, although changing them once a month is ideal. Clogged filters can result in damaged HVAC equipment and increased energy costs, which isn’t a situation you want to deal with when the weather turns colder. Clean filters maximize your home’s air circulation and improve the air quality, so you’re less likely to encounter that stuffy winter feeling.

Calibrate the Thermostat

Thermostats are highly sensitive pieces of equipment that can be affected by dirt, dust, or the slightest movement. Maintaining your thermostat involves calibrating it before a new season. We recommend that a trained technician verify the thermostat calibration when your system is tuned.

Check Refrigerant Levels

Your air conditioner has run all summer without a break, so now is the time to have the refrigerant level checked. You’ll also want to have the the blower motor and evaporator coils nsepcted so they are clear of any dirt, dust, debris, or obstructions. Having these tasks performed at the end of the summer ensures that your system will continue to perform at an optimal level next summer.

Check for System Blockages

Air conditioning systems feature a condensate drain that can sometimes become obstructed or blocked. It’s crucial that any blocked drains be cleared to prevent extensive water leaks or flooding during the winter. If you spot any leaks or water puddles around your system, contact an HVAC repair service immediately.
