3 Tips for Choosing the Right Furnace Filter

There are several things you need to know before you head out to buy a new furnace filter. Without the proper information, you could end up with a filter that actually decreases your system’s efficiency instead of improving it. Use these tips to make sure you select the perfect filter for improved air quality and energy efficiency in your Allen, Texas, home.

Measure Your Current Furnace Filter

The filter size is one of the most important considerations when you’re purchasing this product. Most filters have the size listed along the edge. If you don’t see measurements listed here, you can remove your current filter and simply measure it yourself. The manufacturer’s guidelines for your furnace will also specify the appropriate size for your filter. If you purchase a filter that doesn’t fit snugly into the unit, it’s probably the wrong size.

Check Your System Specifications

Every furnace is different, and extremely high-efficiency filters aren’t always an option. Though true HEPA filters are the most efficient choice for filtering pollutants out of the air, few residential systems can accommodate them. It takes much power to pull air through the fine mesh of a HEPA filter. Therefore, using a filter that’s not suited to your current HVAC system will diminish your energy efficiency and potentially damage the system. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines for the appropriate specifications.

Look at the MERV Rating

The MERV rating on a filter determines how efficient it is at filtering particles out of the air. The lower the rating, the more dust, dander, and other pollutants are getting through. Select a filter with the highest MERV rating your system can handle for the cleanest air and best overall home comfort.

Stock up on filters while you’re buying them. You should change your furnace filter every one to three months to prevent dust accumulation and to keep your system running efficiently. For an additional boost to your efficiency, contact Bill Joplin’s Air Conditioning & Heating at 888-414-4655 and schedule a furnace tuneup as well.
