You can look forward to many years of affordable comfort. Unfortunately, a high seasonal energy efficiency ratio doesn’t automatically guarantee savings. Installation issues are key. In fact, four installation factors can underpin or undo a high SEER rating. Make sure your installation professional pays attention to these four areas of concern:
- Airflow — Your new unit requires sufficient airflow, or you risk inadequate cooling. Your installer should assess your ductwork, making sure the layout isn’t restrictive. Ideally you should have a return register in every room. As a homeowner, you should make sure that all your registers are free of obstructions.
- Charge — Your new system must have the correct charge. That means your technician must measure it at the time of installation. It’s estimated that as many as 70 percent of all air conditioners in the United States may be operating with an incorrect charge.
- Tight ducts — Leaks in your ductwork can account for a significant loss of energy. In addition, leaks can introduce unhealthy contaminants to your airstream. Before your new air conditioner goes in, seal all leaks, using mesh and mastic. Or have your HVAC contractor do the job for you.
- Size — As the cliche goes, you need a system that’s not too big and not too small, but just right. A system that’s too big will cycle on and off too frequently and fail to remove sufficient humidity from the air. A unit that’s too small will quickly become stressed, causing your energy bills to spike. Eventually, your system could fail prematurely.
