Where Are Carrier Air Conditioners Made?

Homeowners wondering “Where are Carrier air conditioners made?” may be surprised to know that Carrier actually manufactured the first operational commercial air conditioner. In 1906, Willis Carrier received a patent for what was then officially called an “Apparatus For Treating Air.” Carrier had invented it four years before as a project to control the atmosphere inside a New York city printing factory. It’s interesting to note that, from the beginning, it was called an “air conditioner” and not merely an “air cooler.” Carrier’s original goal was reducing humidity inside the factory for better print quality. Cooling the air was simply a pleasant by-product of his innovative humidity reduction process. By 1915, Willis Carrier and six other engineers had formed the Carrier Engineering Company and the modern air conditioning industry was born. In 1930, the name was changed to the Carrier Corporation.

In the decades since, the Carrier Corporation has refined air conditioning technology to higher levels of efficiency and cooling performance. The spread of Willis Carrier’s invention has redrawn the maps of growth in the United States, making possible the development of the Sun Belt and other population centers that would have remained sparsely settled because of the climate.  Air conditioning has also increased industrial productivity and helped facilitate the computer revolution by creating the cool, humidity-free interior environments that computers and data centers require. In addition to millions of residences around the world, Carrier air conditioners cool landmarks like the Sistine Chapel in Italy and George Washington’s estate at Mount Vernon.

Today, the question of “Where are Carrier air conditioners made?” is difficult to pin down because cooling and heating is now a product of global engineering. As a unit of United Technologies Corporation, Carrier today operates 67 manufacturing facilities on six continents. Over 60,000 employees in more than 170 countries research, develop and manufacture Carrier air conditioning equipment and related technology.
