What Is NATE Certification and Why Is It Important?

Your home’s heating and cooling system deserves the best maintenance and professional service attention. To ensure your Princeton, Texas, home’s HVAC system receives the proper care, find out why you should look for a NATE-certified service technician and how service technicians receive this certification.

NATE Defined

Recognized by the HVAC industry, NATE, North American Technician Excellence, is a nonprofit certification program. To receive NATE certification, a technician must pass nationally recognized tests and complete periodic retesting to stay up-to-date on the latest HVAC developments.

Receiving NATE Certification

In order to receive NATE certification, technicians must prove their knowledge by passing both written and practical exams. One written test evaluates basic HVAC knowledge, and the second test covers specialty knowledge.

Each technician chooses one of 10 HVAC specialties: air conditioning, air distribution, gas heating, heat pumps, oil heating, hydronics gas, hydronics oil, light commercial refrigeration, commercial refrigeration, or HVAC efficiency analysis. Technicians may choose to become certified in more than one specialty.

Importance of NATE Certification

As a Texas homeowner, choosing a NATE-certified technician to maintain your heating or cooling system is important. NATE certification sets a standard for technical knowledge. Technicians who haven’t been certified may have similar skills, but without NATE certification, you can’t be sure that those technicians maintain the highest standards when servicing your HVAC system.

While NATE certification is voluntary, the certification itself demonstrates technicians’ commitment to their professional training and support for the industry standard.

Verify Your Technician’s Credentials

How do you check to make sure a technician has NATE certification? Ask to see the certification card. You can also check a NATE ID number online on NATE’s website.
