History of Gunter, TX
Gunter is located in Grayson County, Texas. It was one of the later towns in the county to be established. The town was named after John Gunter, who was a cattleman. His family donated the original land for the town.
History of Gunter
The town of Gunter received a post office in 1898. It was then organized as a community in 1902. At this time the tracks of the St. Louis, San Franciso, and Texas Railway came through the area. When the railway came through the area, this was a great thing for the town, it made them a retail and community center for farmers in the surrounding areas. The First National Bank in Gunter was also established.
In 1914 the population was around 800 and there were 36 businesses throughout the town. Gunter’s population continued to grow until 1924. This is when the town decided to incorporate, but this was also sadly when the bank decided to close its doors.
When the bank decided to close, it left many residents of the town in a very tough situation. Farmers and other business owners in the area were unable to continue with their work in the same way. Also, with the Great Depression following alongside two major fires in the town, Gunter’s economy was in bad shape at this time.
However, in the 1950’s, the town began to grow again. By the 1960’s, the population finally was over 500. And in 1991, the population had risen to 926 with over 24 businesses operating in the town. By 2000 the population in Gunter was 1,230 with 37 businesses. The town continues to grow and look forward to the future.
