History of Blue Ridge

The town of Blue Ridge was established in 1876 and was given its name for its amazing blue-flowering grass that grows in the area; from a distance the grass can appear to many like a blue haze. Blue Ridge was first established by a land grant given to Matthiss Mowry from the Republic of Texas for his service in the Texas Revolution.

Business History of Blue Ridge

When the town was established in 1876, a post office was opened, followed shortly by a sawmill, cotton gin, and gristmill. The next business opportunity for the area was the building of the Greenville and Whitewright Northern Traction Company (later the Greenville and Northwestern Railway) railroad line from Blue Ridge to Anna, which was twelve miles northeast of the area. However, the line was sadly abandoned five years later.

Sadness struck on October 8, 1919, when a tornado made its way through Blue Ridge. It managed to kill seven people and destroyed a great amount of the town’s property. Being the resilient town they were, the were able to recover, and by 1930 the 450 residents had electric and natural gas utilities, telephone, paved roads, a high school, and more than twenty newly established businesses in the town.

Blue Ridge was then incorporated in 1936, and in 1940 had thirty businesses established in the community that were serving the over 400 residents that were residing in the area. The number of businesses in the area began to decline after the 1930’s due to mechanization of farming and better job opportunities in more populated areas such as the Dallas/Fort Worth area. By 1984 Blue Ridge had only 5 businesses operating in the area. But, the number started to increase and by 2000, the number of businesses in the area was reported to be 48.
