It’s possible to save money on heating this winter without having to sacrifice your comfort, just by improving your home’s energy efficiency, adjusting your thermostat and keeping the heating system in top shape.
- Have your heating system tuned up by an HVAC professional. Not only will it cut your heating bills, it’ll also lengthen the life of your system. Many of the homes in our region use natural gas for heat, and professional attention adds a measure of safety, since the technician will check all the connections and safety features on these heating systems.
- Ask for a ductwork evaluation as part of the annual service. Leaks can occur at any time and contribute to higher energy bills, reduced indoor air quality and can even pull carbon monoxide into your home’s air if you use any vented gas appliances.
- Check the air filter for the air handler monthly once heating season starts. Dust and dirt that collect on the filter slow the airflow through it, driving up heating costs. The furnace will run longer to heat your home, which also increases wear and tear on the equipment.
- Reverse the direction of the ceiling fans in your home to bring the accumulated heat from the ceiling down to your living areas.
- Use your thermostat wisely. Turn it down when you’ll be away from home and when you sleep. A programmable thermostat is also a wise investment if you tend to forget to adjust the temperature. Smart thermostats have features that ease the programming process, along with control over your system remotely.
- Seal the air leaks in your home around windows and exterior doors. Caulk and weatherstripping help you save money on heating costs and are easy to use.
- Consider adding insulation to the attic if yours has less than 16 inches, the amount the Department of Energy recommends for this climate.
