How to Discover the Ideal Temperature for Your Home

How often do you turn your air conditioner on until you’re freezing, then raise the temperature until you’re sweating again? Sometimes it’s difficult to find the perfect temperature. Before getting too frustrated with your thermostat, learn about optimal temperatures to keep your home cozy and comfortable.

The Most Comfortable Temperature

According to the Lansing State Journal, 72 degrees is the most comfortable temperature due to our body temperature and the rate at which we generate heat. Yet there are other factors to consider that might require a small change in this temperature, such as whether it is day or night and whether you are trying to rest or work.

Best Temperature for Sleeping

As you sleep, your body cools to its ideal internal temperature. If your room is too hot or cold, your body will struggle to reach its ideal temperature, failing to achieve quality sleep. Generally, you will be able to achieve the best sleep quality if you set your heater or air conditioner between 65 and 72 degrees.

Best Temperature for Daytime

Your body runs warmer awake than asleep and becomes acclimated to the outside temperature. For Texas temperatures, you should set the thermostat higher during the day than at night. During summers in McKinney, outside temperatures average 87 to 96 degrees, so the air conditioning would be best around 75 to 78 degrees. During winter, when the outside temperature averages 55 to 63 degrees, indoor temperatures of 68 to 70 degrees would be ideal.

Best Temperature for Productivity

Research shows optimal office temperatures are between 70 and 73 degrees for maximum productivity. It’s difficult to achieve the perfect temperature in an office because everyone is different, but the general optimal temperature of 72 degrees might make the best compromise.
