Deals and Steals: How to Save on Purchasing a New AC Unit

A new central air conditioning system can provide exceptional indoor comfort and greater efficiency when compared to models manufactured less than a decade ago. However, AC equipment is complex, and consumers may find the buying process confusing and slightly intimidating.

Purchasing Considerations

A sound air conditioner purchase is based on knowledge, research and a basic understanding of SEER ratings and load calculations. A system that can not properly cool and dehumidify the indoor environment is no bargain, regardless of the price.

When comparing different brands and models of heating and air conditioning equipment, consumers should consider the following strategies to save money and maximize purchasing power.

Choose the Right Contractor

Unfortunately, many dealers continue to use the outdated “square-feet-per-ton” formula to establish system capacity. This typically results in an equipment installation that is over-sized for the application. High BTU output equipment is more expensive to purchase and can short cycle, which will affect performance and degrade humidity control. In essence, the buyer pays for capacity they will never use.

Professional HVAC contractors run a complete set of complex calculations to precisely match the equipment’s capacity to the building’s cooling load requirements. In many instances, an existing air conditioner can be replaced with a smaller, less expensive unit that will improve indoor comfort and substantially lower monthly cooling costs. Contractors that do not run a complete set of ACCA Manual J load calculations before making an air conditioning equipment recommendation should be avoided.

Buy in the Offseason

An HVAC contractor has the heaviest air conditioning backlog during the summer months when the temperature is usually extreme. While most heating and AC dealers are honest and ethical, prices still tend to escalate when the contractor is very busy. Pricing can also be circumstance driven. When a unit is beyond repair, and the outdoor weather is severe, the consumer is not negotiating from a position of strength.

In areas with hot summer temperatures, an air conditioner replacement purchase is best completed during the winter months when the contractor’s pricing structure may be more flexible.

Look for Specials

Many contractors run periodic specials on the different products and services they provide. This often includes discounts on central air conditioners as well as special financing terms on qualified equipment purchases. Check out our specials page at Bill Joplin’s for updated information on all our current promotions.

Rebates and Tax Credits

Throughout the year, equipment manufacturers offer various rebates on the different models of air conditioners they produce. Rebate activity escalates when a new model is introduced, and the manufacturer is eager to liquidate existing inventory. Regularly checking the manufacturer’s website and different trade publications can help identify rebate opportunities and projected model replacement dates.

Under current federal law, homeowner’s can claim a tax credit up to 10 percent of the total cost of a new AC installation with a limit of $350. The credit can be extended to $500 when used in conjunction with other qualifying energy efficient devices. These tax credits are set to expire on January 1, 2014.

Securing Bids

Securing bids from three licensed local contractors can provide a basis for comparison between different brands and models of AC equipment. Dealers with strong references and a commitment to the local community usually welcome quality competition.

Don’t Buy Equipment Online

Installing a new air conditioning system requires training, certification, licensing and experience. HVAC equipment is complex, and factory trained and NATE certified technicians have a complete understanding of the refrigeration cycle, air balancing, pressures and other important aspects of the installation process.

Most HVAC contractors will not install equipment purchased from an online vendor. Improper installation of an AC system will likely void the manufacturer’s warranty.
