Keep Heating Costs Down This Winter in Your Frisco Home

As temperatures cool, the steps you take to reduce heating costs will keep more energy dollars in your bank account this winter. Each of these tips also offers a cost-effective way to manage your energy costs year-round when adapted for the cooling season.

Lower the Thermostat

Reducing the temperature inside your home will cut your heating costs. A programmable thermostat will take the work out of remembering to turn it down at bedtime and when you leave for the day. You can choose from simple to sophisticated models, based on your HVAC system and preferences. Turn up the temperature in the summer when you’re away from home.

Turn Down the Water Heater

Next to heating your home, the water heater uses the most energy in your home. By turning it down to 120 degrees, you’ll not only save money, but also prevent some of the hard water deposits that form at the bottom. These deposits shorten the water heater’s lifespan and drive up water heating costs as well.

Seal Air Leaks

Unless your home is fairly new, chances are there are air leaks around the window and exterior door frames, and possibly around the pipes, wires and cables that enter your home. These leaks allow air to enter and exit, and sealing them will reduce heating costs immediately.

Home improvement centers offer various types of caulk, weatherstripping and expanding foam that will seal the leaks around your home’s envelope. If you have gaps around the dryer vent or flues that leave your home, look for those that are heat-tolerant or use metal flashing to seal leaks.

Add Insulation

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that homes in our region have at least 10 inches of insulation in the attic, for a minimum R-value of 30. Each inch of fiberglass or cellulose insulation slows heat transfer for three hours. Investing in more insulation is one of the most effective and durable ways you can lower the cost to condition your home.

Having your furnace maintained also will reduce heating costs. To learn more, contact the trusted pros at Bill Joplin’s Air Conditioning & Heating, providing superior HVAC services for Frisco area homeowners.
