How to Replace a HVAC Air Filter

Many homeowners feel intimidated by the idea of changing their own air filter. However, it’s one of the easiest tasks to perform. Once you know how, you’ll be able to enjoy cleaner air, a top-performing HVAC system and a lower energy bill. Read on to discover more.

The Importance of Changing Filters

When filters fill up, they no longer can perform their duty. All types of air pollutants circulate through the house and place your family at risk for greater health dangers. Mold, dander, bacteria, viruses, dust, dirt and debris all fly through the air unnoticed by the naked eye. Furthermore, a dirty filter makes HVAC systems struggle to push air through the vents and ducts. If left as is, the added work can wear down parts and result in costly emergency repairs. That’s why filters need to be changed on a regular basis.

Filter Replacement Frequency

The standard recommendation for the average American home is to change filters every three months. However, two factors play into the equation. You’ll need to consider those with allergies or the presence of pets. Homes with either of these should change filters more frequently, usually every one or two months.

Purchasing the Right Air Filter Replacement

To determine the filter you need, simply remove the old one. The dimensions are located on the edges. You can simply write these numbers down and take the paper with you. To make things easier, you can always bring the old filter to the hardware store. The staff should be able to easily locate the correct filter for you.

How to Remove the Old Filter

Turn the system off before you do anything. If not, the filter could be sucked into the vent. Next, find the location of the old filter. You’ll normally see it where the vent meets the unit. You may need to remove a panel or casing first. Some require you to remove screws. After that, you should be able to simply slide the filter out.

Inserting the New Filter

With a new filter in hand, installing it isn’t difficult at all. Return it back to the position from where you removed the old filter. However, pay attention to arrows on the edges of the filter. It usually can only face one way for the air to pass through. If the filter doesn’t fit, then you most likely bought the wrong size. Don’t fret if that happens the first time. It’s a common mistake for homeowners. Simply return to the store and get the right size. If the new filter fits, then replace any panels and screws. Then, turn the unit back on. Congratulations! You’ve successfully fit a new air filter into your HVAC system.
