Preparing ahead of time for your heat pump installation will help you get the most from this versatile appliance. The most important factors in choosing this type of conditioning appliance are its sizing, choosing its energy efficiency and where to locate the outdoor condenser.
Sizing
Your HVAC contractor should use software called Manuals J and D to arrive at the correct size of your system. The load calculation includes these elements of your home:
- Floorplan design;
- Cubic footage you need to condition;
- Air infiltration rates;
- Windows, their orientation to the sun and energy efficiency;
- Insulation levels in the attic;
- Heat-producing appliances indoors;
- Family size and ages;
- Preferred indoor temperatures; and
- Landscaping factors.
Manual J uses these elements to calculate the size of the heat pump, and Manual D uses the results of Manual J to determine the configuration and capacity of the ductwork. The contractor also needs to inspect your current ductwork and seal any leaks.
Correct sizing is critical because systems that are too large run for short periods more frequently, driving up energy costs, wear and tear, and leaving humidity behind. A heat pump that’s too small won’t keep you as comfortable during temperature extremes. Improving insulation and sealing air leaks could help you choose a smaller size, costing you less initially and over time.
Energy efficiency
Heat pumps have two efficiency ratings. As a general rule, you should choose the highest your budget can afford before heat pump installation. SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) applies to cooling and HSPF (heating season performance factor) describes heating efficiency. The minimum SEER is 13 and HSPF is 7.7. Higher ratings will lower energy bills.
Placement
The outdoor condenser needs to be placed in as shady a place as possible. Keeping it out of sunshine speeds the refrigerant cooling process in the summer. The condenser should also be away from heavy vegetation and have clearance on all its sides.
