4 Ways to Lower Humidity in Your Texas Home

There’s no denying how oppressive Texas summers are. Temperatures can soar into the triple digits, and relative humidity pushes the heat index to alarming highs. While the outdoor conditions are bad enough, high humidity indoors can add to your discomfort. You’ll notice it when you see condensation on your windows and your skin feels sticky or clammy to the touch. However, this doesn’t have to last forever. The next time you observe high humidity in your McKinney, Texas, home, follow these steps to get it under control.

Buy a Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are an easy way to lower the humidity in your home. By removing excess moisture from the air, they make your home feel more comfortable and reduce the dampness on walls that can lead to mold growth. Depending on your needs, dehumidifiers come in both portable and whole-home versions.

Always Ventilate

When cooking or taking a shower, always remember to ventilate. During these activities, moisture enters the air, and without proper ventilation such as a vent or exterior fan, this water increases the moisture in your home. You may also want to consider hanging your clothes out to dry, as even exterior ventilated dryers still produce some moisture inside.

Tend to Your Plants

If you love plants, it’s likely that you have several in your home. However, plants release moisture in the form of water vapor, resulting in even higher humidity levels. Consider putting your plants outside, or at least place them in a single room.

Watch Out for Leaky Pipes

Leaky pipes are another common cause of excessive humidity indoors. To eradicate the problem, search your home for any exposed pipes with condensation on them or pools of water near them. Use pipe tubing to insulate the pipes and prevent them from sweating, which will help.

Lowering humidity in your home starts with a few rules such as keeping the doors and windows closed, but after that, you need something a little extra. If you want to lower your humidity further, consider calling the experts at Bill Joplin’s Air Conditioning & Heating at 888-414-4655. Our team of professionals will tackle the problem head-on.
