3 Cheap Ways to Keep Your Home Safe From Volatile Organic Compounds

Dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be highly concentrated in your home’s air. Here are some easy and cheap ways to reduce VOCs at home.

Airborne substances known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are pollutants that can cause asthmatic reactions, allergies, and even cancer. Protect your home and and family’s health in McKinney, TX from VOCs by using these techniques.

Make Sure Your Home is Well-Ventilated

VOCs collect in your home’s air. According to the EPA, the concentration of VOCs inside a home is five to nine times more than the concentration outside. Letting fresh air in through windows or through an energy-recovery ventilator (ERV) will help dilute the amount of chemicals in your home’s air. It’s free to open a window, but it can end up costing you money if you’re also running air conditioning. An ERV lets in fresh air while still keeping temperature constant.

Limit the Amount of VOC Products in Your Home

This method actually saves you money by limiting what you buy. Many products like appliances, household cleaners, paint, composite wood, and carpeting give off VOCs. To avoid them, buy open-air floor models that have already off-gassed their VOCs or avoid buying them if they aren’t labeled “No VOC.” Also, use ‘natural’ cleaners like vinegar rather than chemicals that add to the VOCs in your home.

Use an Air Purification System

There are many levels of air purification systems available depending on your budget. One of the cheapest ways to clean the air naturally is with household plants. A NASA study conducted by Dr. B. C. Wolverton found that many species of household plants are effective at removing carbon monoxide, benzene, formaldehyde, and other pollutants from the air.

For a more advanced way to remove up to 95 percent of indoor air pollutants, install an indoor air purifier.
